Going into the 2017 NFL season, the league head offices were skeptical about the quarterback draft class. Scouts didn’t know if former Clemson standout Deshaun Watson, who lost 5 games over his 3-year career, would be able to adjust his play style to an NFL offense. Watson played very well for the Texans until he tore his ACL in a practice in November. On top of this, Chicago Bear’s draft pick Mitchell Trubisky went under center and got his first NFL start against the Minnesota Vikings and since then has shown that he has potential to be a solid starter in the NFL.
The 2018 Draft seems to be a “goldmine” for NFL caliber quarterbacks. As of now the top two quarterbacks who are likely to enter the draft are Sam Darnold and Josh Rosen. Rosen has a slight edge over Darnold according to analysts and they are even saying that he is likely to be the number 1 overall pick.
Josh Rosen is a UCLA standout who is known for being able to make throws that most other college quarterbacks only wish they could make. The 6-foot-4 218lb junior went for 3,670 yards his freshman season and quickly made a name for himself. This past season Rosen came back from a season-ending shoulder injury and had a total of 3,756 yards with 26 touchdowns. Rosen’s accuracy, footwork, playmaking abilities, and size make him a prospect that could potentially turn into a valuable franchise quarterback.
If Sam Darnold were to enter the draft it is likely that he would be the second quarterback taken after Josh Rosen. However, either one of these prospects has a shot at going as the number 1 pick in the draft. Many people in the NFL were wondering if Darnold could repeat his outstanding performance from the 2016 season in which he threw 31 touchdowns. This season Darnold had some issues with his footwork early in the season which slightly decreased his value to NFL scouts. Many evaluators are saying that Darnold could benefit from another year in college, as he is only a third-year Sophomore.
Aside from these two quarterbacks, there are several others notable ones such as Josh Allen and Baker Mayfield who will likely be high draft picks in this year’s draft. Allen’s size and projectability along with Mayfield’s competitive edge and leadership skills make them prospects that NFL teams will not want to miss out on.
